Darwin Correspondence Project

To J. W. Lubbock   18 November [1856]1

Down.

Nov. 18th

Dear Sir John Lubbock

I am much obliged for your note, which I will forward to Mr. Wedgwood. I will speak about the Cards of Admission.—2

I see it was an entire blunder of A. Woods about your wanting the Furniture.3

Pray believe me | Yours sincerely | Ch. Darwin

Footnotes

Dated on the basis that the letter refers to the auction of Sarah Elizabeth (Sarah) Wedgwood’s effects (see n. 2, below).
This is probably a reference to admission to the auction of Sarah Wedgwood’s house and its contents. The auction was to be held on 9 December (see letter to W. E. Darwin, 25 [November 1856]).
A. Wood was probably overseeing the sale of Sarah Wedgwood’s house and effects. CD’s Account book (Down House MS) records a payment of £4 to him, on behalf of Josiah Wedgwood III, on 20 November 1856.

Summary

Obliged for JWL’s note [missing]. Will forward it to Mr Wedgwood.

Remarks, "it was … blunder of A. Woods about your wanting the Furniture."
