George Campbell
1824–92
Scottish administrator in India. Educated at St Andrews University. Entered the service of the East India Company in 1842. Held positions of magistrate, and judicial and financial commissioner; lieutenant-governor of Bengal, 1870–4. Returned to Scotland in 1874. Liberal MP for Kirkcaldy, 1875–92. Wrote on politics and ethnography. Knighted, 1873.
