Te Hapuku (Te Ika-nui-o-te-moana)
d. 1878
Maori leader. Leader of the Ngati Te Whatu-i-apiti. Kinship links made him influential throughout the region of Hawke’s Bay. Signatory to the Treaty of Waitangi, 1840. Sold much land to the Europeans, which caused friction with other Maori leaders. Retired to Poukawa in 1858 after a siege at Whakawhiti.
