German geologist and mineralogist. PhD, Bonn, 1861. Professor of mineralogy and geology, Lemberg, 1863; full professor, 1865. Professor, Kiel, 1868; Leipzig, 1870. Director of the mineralogical museum, Leipzig, 1870. Did pioneering work in the microscopic examination of rocks.
