Thomas Croxen Archer

1817–85

Botanist. Trained as a surgeon and developed an interest in botany. Served in the Import Department of the Customs in Liverpool, 1842–56. Lecturer in botany in the medical school, Liverpool; professor, Queen’s College then Blackburn College. Director of the Edinburgh Industrial Museum, later Edinburgh Museum of Science and Art, 1860–85.
