Psychiatrist and writer. Superintendent, Devon County Asylum, Exminster, 1844–62. Co-founder, 1853, Asylum Journal, later Journal of Mental Science; editor 1853–62. Wrote extensively on insanity. Lord Chancellor’s visitor in lunacy, 1862–76. Co-founder of Brain, 1878. FRCP 1859. FRS 1866. Knighted 1894.
