American-born physician and botanist. Resident in England from 1816. MD, Edinburgh, 1824. Lecturer on botany and materia medica, Webb Street School of Medicine, London, 1825. Conducted a successful medical practice in London, 1825–32. Secretary, Linnean Society of London, 1832–9; treasurer, 1856–61; vice-president, 1861–3.
