Civil servant, landowner, and animal breeder. With the War Office, 1858–70. Assistant commissioner, Royal Commission on Agriculture, 1879. Attached to the India Office, 1880–1901. Bred asses, mules, and poultry; published on horse, ass, and mule breeding with William Bernhard Tegetmeier. Resided at Coombe, Surrey, and Downe Hall, Down, Kent, where he was a neighbour of CD’s.
