1829–72

French botanist. Botanical assistant, Muséum d’Histoire Naturelle, 1858. Succeeded Adolphe Théodore Brongniart as professor of botany at the muséum. Studied diverse aspects of plant anatomy and physiology; in collaboration with Brongniart, studied the flora of New Caledonia.
