John William Dawson
1820–99
Canadian geologist and educationalist. Investigated the geology of the maritime provinces with Charles Lyell in 1842 and 1852. Superintendent of education for common schools in Nova Scotia, 1850. Appointed principal and professor of geology at McGill University, 1855. Knighted, 1884. FRS 1862.
