Clergyman, mathematician, and missionary. Fellow, St John’s College, Cambridge, 1837; college tutor, 1842–6. Mathematical tutor, Harrow, 1838–42. Vicar of Forncett St Mary, Norfolk, 1846–53. Bishop of Natal, South Africa, 1853–83. Published The Pentateuch and Book of Joshua critically examined (1862–79). An attempt to remove him from the bishopric in 1863 was overturned in 1865.
