James Stansfeld

Politician and social reformer. A supporter of the Northern Reform Union. Elected radical MP for Halifax, 1859. Financial secretary to the Treasury, 1869; president of the Local Government Board, 1871; appointed the first woman to be a poor-law inspector in 1872. Knighted, 1895.
