John Hookham Frere
1769–1846
Diplomat, politician, and author. MP for West Looe, Cornwall, 1796–1802. Helped to produce the Anti-Jacobin, or Weekly Examiner, 1797–8. Succeeded George Canning as under-secretary of state for the Foreign Office in 1799. Held various diplomatic positions in Spain and Portugal. Inherited his father’s estate in 1807. Settled in Malta in the 1820s and amused himself with literary work.
