Darwin Correspondence Project

From J. V. Carus   26 January 1871

Leipzig,

Jan. 26. 1871.

Dear Sir,

On page 128, note 45 of Vol. I. of your new work you quote some papers of Mr J. Wood. But unfortunately you give only the references to the Volumes without giving the title of the periodical.1 May I ask you to write me, what periodical you mean? Perhaps I may find it out here, but I think the shortest way is to ask you directly. At any rate in a second edition you must give the title.

Two misprints: p. 118. note 28. Here the second Volume of the “Variation” is meant. p. 20. note 23. Canestrini quotes Hyrtl (the Vienna anatomist) instead of Hyrt.2

Pray excuse my haste, and believe me | Yours ever truly, | J. Victor Carus

Footnotes

Carus was preparing the German translation of Descent. The title of the periodical in question, Proceedings of the Royal Society of London, was added to the list of errata at the beginning of the second volume of the first printing, and to the text of the second printing of Descent. The reference is to John Wood (1825–91).
The first correction was not made, although it was added to the list of errata at the beginning of the second volume of the first printing; the second was made in Descent 2d ed., p. 14 n. 28. The references are to Giovanni Canestrini and Josef Hyrtl.
