On opening your cover, I find that the wrong letter has been sent to me2—and that mine has probably gone to your Radiolariæ friend—who I trust is not the Pres. R.S!3

See letter to Ernst Haeckel, 30 December [1863] – 3 January [1864] and n. 5. The letter intended for Falconer has not been found. Falconer probably refers to Edward Sabine, who was president of the Royal Society of London, and instrumental in the choice of Adam Sedgwick for the award of the society’s Copley Medal in 1863, in preference to CD (see letter from Edward Sabine to John Phillips, 12 November 1863 and nn. 4 and 5).
