My dear Sir

I enclose a draft for £10s 100 due tomorrow (ie 27th) as I believe.— I return you my very sincere thanks for all your great kindness & assistance to my Boys. I cannot say how I regret for our own sake your projected African Expedition. I yet hope it may be deferred, at least till the Spring.

    The year is given by an entry in CD's Account book recording the payment mentioned in the letter (see n. 2, below).

    An entry dated 26 September 1859 in CD's Account book (Down House MS) indicates that this sum was paid to Reed. Reed was tutoring Francis Darwin. He had formerly tutored George Howard Darwin.

    It is not known whether Reed visited Africa. CD continued to pay him for tutorials in 1860.
