CD’s son. Mathematician. BA, Cambridge (Trinity College), 1868; fellow, 1868–78. Studied law in London, 1869–72; called to the bar, 1872, but did not practise. Plumian Professor of astronomy and experimental philosophy, Cambridge University, 1883–1912. President of the British Association for the Advancement of Science, 1905. Knighted, 1905. FRS 1879.
