Henry Hyde (Hyde) Clarke
1815–95
Economist, civil engineer, and philologist. Railway surveyor in Scotland in the 1830s. Founder subscriber, London and County Bank, 1836. Travelled in India and reported on the telegraph service there in 1849. Member, London (later Royal) Statistical Society, from 1868. Published numerous papers on philology and the origin of languages for the Royal Historical Society. Contributed to business-cycle theory. Reported by contemporaries to speak over a hundred languages.
