Fullerian Professor of physiology at the Royal Institution of Great Britain, 1844–56; professor of forensic medicine, University College, London; physiology lecturer in physiology, London Hospital, 1845–56. Registrar of the University of London, 1856–79. Founding member of the Marine Biological Association. FRS 1844.
