Robert  Brown

1842–95

  Botanist , geographer and journalist . Studied at the Universities of Edinburgh, Leyden, Copenhagen, and Rostock. Travelled widely throughout mainland Europe, Greenland, and America, North and South America, 1861–3. Botanist to the expedition to British Columbia, 1863. Commander of the exploration of Vancouver Island, 1864. Made a study of the glaciation of Greenland in 1867. Lectured in natural history, School of Arts and Heriot-Watt College, Edinburgh, from 1869. Moved to London in 1876 and wrote for a number of popular science publications.
