Professor of anatomy and physiology, Hampden-Sydney Medical College, Virginia, 1843–8. Hersey Professor of anatomy, Harvard University, 1847–74. Professor and curator, Peabody Museum of American Archaeology and Ethnology, Harvard, 1866–74.
