Palaeontologist. Officer in the East India Company's navy, 1811–25. Became a partner in a bank at Hasketon, near Woodbridge. Curator of the Geological Society of London, 1838–9; fellow, 1839. Studied the fossils of the East Anglian Crag, specialising in Eocene fossil Mollusca.
