Alfred Russel Wallace, 1823–1913
Naturalist . Collector in the Amazon, 1848–52; Collector in the Malay Archipelago, 1854–62. Independently formulated a theory of evolution by natural selection in 1858. Lecturer and author of works on protective coloration, mimicry, and zoogeography. President of the Land Nationalisation Society, 1881. Wrote widely on socialism, spiritualism, and vaccination. FRS 1893.
