Hermann Vöchting
1847–1917
German plant physiologist and botanist. Studied botany at Berlin and Göttingen. Professor extraordinarius of botany, Bonn, 1877. Professor and director of the botanic garden, Basel, 1878; Tübingen, 1887. Studied plant movement, organ formation, and the influence of light on flower formation and leaf position in his seminal work, Über Organbildung im Pflanzenreich (1878). Discovered the fixed polarity of the apexes and bases of shoots.
