William Trelease

American botanist. BS, Cornell University, 1880; DSc, Harvard, 1884. Instructor in botany, University of Wisconsin, 1881; professor and head of the botany department, 1883. Englemann Professor of botany, Washington University, St Louis, Missouri, 1885. First director of the Missouri Botanical Garden at St Louis, 1889–1912. Professor and head of the Department of Botany, University of Illinois, 1913. Known mostly for his work in taxonomy.
