Wilhelm von Tegetthoff
1827–71
Austrian naval officer. Attended the naval college at Venice from 1840. Austrian navy cadet, 1845; commander, 1858; rear admiral, 1864. Admiral, inspector-general, and commander of the Austrian navy, 1868. Privy-councillor and lifelong member of the Herrenhaus (Austrian house of lords), 1868. Noted for his military victories especially at the battle of Lissa, 1866.
