German theologian. Studied at Blaubeuren lower seminary, 1841–4; University of Tübingen, 1845–9. Tutor to the children of the Duke of Argyll, 1854–9. Pastor, St Kilians in Heilbronn, 1861–8; Friedrichshafen, 1868–78. Dean of Schwäbish-Hall, 1878–80. Head, Schöntal lower seminary, 1880–6. Prelate and general superintendent, Heilbronn, 1887; court preacher and member of the Protestant Consistory, Stuttgart, 1888–98. Author of Die darwin’schen Theorien und ihre Stellung zur Philosophie, Religion und Moral (1876).
