German physician, journalist, teacher, and writer. Doctor of medicine and surgery, Basel, 1853. From 1853, taught natural history, physiology, language, and literature at a number of secondary schools near London; examiner at the College of Preceptors and on the editorial staff of the Educational Times, 1862–83. Professor of German, Royal Military Academy, Woolwich, from 1862. Returned to Heidelberg in 1883.
