Swiss-born zoologist, oceanographer and mining engineer. Son of Louis Agassiz. Emigrated to the United States in 1849. Joined the U.S. survey of Washington Territory boundaries in 1859. Superintendent, Calumet copper mine, Michigan, 1867; later president of the corporation. Curator of the Harvard Museum of Comparative Zoology, 1874.
