Francis Turner Palgrave
Poet , critic and educationalist . Eldest son of Francis and Elizabeth Palgrave. Assistant private secretary to William Ewart Gladstone (DNB), 1846. Joined the department of education in 1848; vice-principal, Kneller Hall, 1850–5; examiner and assistant secretary, 1855–84. Art critic for the Saturday Review. Professor of poetry, Oxford University, 1885–95.
