George Hunn Nobbs

1799–1884

Irish-born missionary. Entered the Royal Navy, 1811; lieutenant, Chilean Navy, 1820; relinquished his commission circa 1822. Merchant vessel chief mate and captain on journeys to west Africa, 1822–4. Following a failed sealing expedition, arrived at Pitcairn Island, 1828. Ordained priest in England, 1852. Returned to Pitcairn as a missionary for the Society for the Propagation of the Gospel, 1853. In 1856, was removed with the population of Pitcairn to Norfolk Island, where he served as chaplain to the community until his death.
