Thomas Meehan
English-born botanist , horticulturist and author . Gardener at the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, 1845–8. Emigrated to the United States in 1848, where he worked as a gardener. Established a nursery in Germantown, Pennsylvania, c 1853. Editor, Gardener’s Monthly, 1859–87; editor Meehan’s Monthly, 1891–1901. Botanist on the Philadelphia state board of agriculture, 1877–1901. Elected to the Academy of Natural Sciences of Philadelphia, 1860; elected to the American Philosophical Society, 1871.
