Friedrich Max Müller (Müller, Friedrich Max)


German-born orientalist and philologist. Published an edition of the Rigveda, the most important of the sacred books of the Brahmans, 1849–73. Moved to Paris in 1845; settled in Oxford in 1848 after fleeing the revolution in France. Deputy Taylorian Professor of modern European languages, Oxford University, 1850–4; professor, 1854–68; professor of comparative philology, 1868–75. Curator of the Bodleian Library, Oxford, 1856–63 and 1881–94.
