William Prime Marshall
1816–1906
Engineer and amateur naturalist. Attended King’s College, London. Worked in the office of Robert Stephenson (1803–59) on drawings for the London and Birmingham Railway, 1835. Worked on design and construction of the North Midland Railway and was appointed locomotive superintendent, 1839–43. Consulting practice at Birmingham, 1848. Secretary of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, 1849–77. Took part in founding the Birmingham and Midland Institute. Father of Arthur Milnes Marshall.
