Geologist and naturalist. Emigrated to New Zealand, 1840. Made important studies of the Dinornis beds. Appointed Commissioner of Crown Lands, Otago, in 1851. Supported Maori claims for land. Entered politics in the late 1850s and was elected for Wallace in 1861. Member of the Legislative Council, 1866–95.
