French invertebrate zoologist. Assistant to Henri Milne-Edwards. Professor of zoology in Lille, 1854–64; at the Muséum d’histoire naturelle, Paris, 1865–9; at the Faculté des sciences, Paris, from 1869. Elected to the Académie des sciences, 1871.
