Hubert Howe Bancroft
1832–1918
American businessman and historian. Opened a bookstore in San Francisco in 1856; it was so successful he was able to semi-retire in 1869 and devote himself to the study of history. Developed a historical workshop employing up to fifty people at a time to help him produce a series of works on the history of the western United States.
