Geologist and palaeontologist . Assistant secretary, Geological Society, 1851–62; responsible for editing the Journal of the Geological Society. Lecturer on geology, Royal Military College, 1858; professor, 1862. Later professor of geology at the Staff College, Sandhurst; retired in 1880. President of the Geologists’ Association, 1879–81. An authority on Phyllopoda, Ostracoda, and Foraminifera. FRS 1872.
