Mark Hopkins
1802–87
American moral philosopher. Graduated from Williams College, Massachusetts, in 1824. MD, 1829. Practised medicine in Binghamton, New York, and New York City. Professor of moral philosophy and rhetoric, Williams College, 1830; president, 1836–72. Licensed to preach by the Berkshire Association of Congregational Ministers, 1833. Rejected Darwinism and biblical criticism.
