Danish-born chemist.Attended University of Copenhagen. Emigrated to United States, 1861. Continued his studies at the Missouri Medical College. Professor of physical science department, Iowa State University, 1864–89. Founded and sustained the first state weather service. Professor of chemistry, St Louis College of Pharmacy, 1889–1903, and at the medical department of St Louis University, 1903–7. Consulting chemist from 1907.
