Edinburgh publishing house ; from 1834, a partnership between Adam Black (1784–1874) and his nephew Charles Black (1807–54). Publishers of the Encyclopedia Britannica and the Edinburgh Review. Acquired the rights to Walter Scott’s Waverley novels in 1851.
