Alexander Ivanovich Herzen
1838–70
Russian radical. Left Russia in 1847; settled in London in 1852. Opened a Russian printing press in 1853 which, from 1857 to 1865, printed the radical newspaper "Kolokol" ("The Bell"), which was smuggled into Russia. Had great influence among Russian radicals and numerous contacts among the progressive thinkers of Europe.
