American editor and writer. Head of a Baltimore girls’ school, 1868–72. Writer and associate editor, Southern Review, 1872–77; editor, 1877. Studied biology at Johns Hopkins in 1876. An editor of Scribner’s Monthly from 1879, and its successor, Century, until 1906. Wrote science books for children, mostly on botany and geology.
