James Backhouse

1794–1869

Naturalist and Quaker missionary. Travelled in Tasmania, 1832–4; Australia, 1835–7; South Africa, 1838–40. Collected Australian plants for William Jackson Hooker at Glasgow University. Returned to England in 1841 and maintained a nursery in York, devoting much time to missionary and temperance work.
