James Hall, 4th baronet
1761–1832
Scottish geologist and chemist. Succeeded to the baronetcy in 1776. Travelled in Europe, where he met several European scientists and became interested in geology and chemistry, 1783–6. A strong supporter of James Hutton, carrying out experimental work to counter criticisms of Hutton’s Theory of the earth (1795). MP for Mitchell, Cornwall, 1807–12. President of the Royal Society of Edinburgh, 1812–20. FRS 1806.
