Naturalist to the Niger expedition, 1841–2. Curator of the Zoological Society museum, 1843–5. Conservator of Lord Derby’s menagerie at Knowsley until 1850. Undertook an expedition to South America, where he collected many rare birds and other animals. Upon his return, he became a dealer in birds for a time.
