  Physician and meteorologist . Surgeon with the East India Company in China, 1807–9, 1810–11. Practised as a physician in London, 1811–55. Gave lectures at the Philomathic Institution published as Elements of physics (1827). One of the founders of the University of London, 1836. FRS 1838.
