Civil servant and politician. At Trinity College, Cambridge, 1866–70. Admitted to the Inner Temple, 1870. Clerk to the table of the House of Commons, 1872–82. Private secretary to the first commissioner of works, 1873–4. MP for North Ayrshire, 1885–92. Justice of the peace for Ayrshire.
