Baltic German geologist and palaeontologist. MD, Vilna (now Vilnius) University, 1819. Lecturer in zoology, Dorpat (now Tartu) University, 1821–3; professor, Kazan University, 1823–7; professor of zoology, comparative anatomy, and obstetrics, Vilna University, 1827–38; St Petersburg, 1838–55. Collected fossils from all over Russia and from 1853 to 1868 published on them in his Lethaea Rossica. A supporter of evolutionary theory after the publication of Origin.
