George Samuel Windsor Earl
1813–65
Merchant, travel writer, and colonial official. Wrote on the geography and ethnography of south-east Asia and northern Australia. Promoted British commercial interests in Singapore and the Malayan Archipelago. Commissioner for the crown lands, Port Essington, Australia, circa 1838–49. Assistant resident for the Straits Settlements in Singapore, 1858, and Penang, 1859–65.
